History

Fosen Yard is the holding company for the two yards Bergen Group Fosen/Fosen Mek. Verksteder AS at Rissa, Norway, and Bergen Group Landskrona/LandskronaVarvet AB at Landskrona, Sweden.  Both yards have a long history in their respective regions for being a cornerstone of traditional industry.

Both Fosen Mek. Verksteder and LandskronaVarvet have been involved in shipbuilding since 1918, providing required know how and experience to service ship owners in their need for high quality ships.

Fosen Mek. Verksteder (FMV) operated under the name "Frengen Slip & Motorverksted" until 1972. Mr. Jens Bye bought the Frengen yard in 1962 and developed it into a modern shipyard. In 1972 the yard moved much of its activities to Kvithyll at Rissa. Anna Synnøve Bye, Jens Bye’s daughter, took over the management of the company in 1988. The yard has been in family ownership until 2007, when the yard was taken over by a group of 6 Norwegian investors. Presently 450 people work at FMV, of which 250 are employees at the yard.

Historically Fosen Mek. Verksteder has produced a long range of ship segments. During the last 20 years the yard has specialized on RoRo/RoPax, Cruise and Offshore vessels.

LandskronaVarvet was from 1918 part of Øresundsvarvet. Øresundsvarvet was from the 40ties part of Gøtaverken, at that time the world’s largest ship yard group. During the recession in the shipping industry at the 70ties, Gøtaverken was taken over by the Swedish government through Svenska Varv. In 1982 the newbuilding section of the yard was taken over by Bruces Shipyard and in 2001 the yard was renamed LandskronaVarvet. Fosen Mek. Verksteder owned 50% of Bruces Shipyard, and in 2002 the Norwegian shipyard took full control over LandskronaVarvet. Presently 220 people work at LandskronaVarvet, of which 60 are employees at the yard.

Historically LandskronaVarvet has constructed hulls for a long range of ship segments. During the last 10 years the yard has specialized in hulls for RoRo/RoPax, Cruise and Offshore vessels for Fosen Mek. Verksteder and fishing vessels for other yards.
